Visual Editions commissioned this series of photographs to illustrate their 2015 publication of Miguel de Cervantes 1605 novel Don Quixote.
Don Quixote is a provincial elderly nobleman fallen on hard times in La Mancha, Spain. Quixote is driven mad through obsessively reading books on chivalry. This obsession leads Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza to embark upon a meandering quest to win the heart of a local women. As the pair travel across Spain Quixote’s failing grasp on reality leads their journey to becoming interwoven with the chivalric adventures of his books.
The project aimed to capture the romantic scenery of Don Quixote through the lens of contemporary landscape photography. We attempted to retrace the fictional journey of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza along with use of additional locations to represent the pair’s adventures. This process culminated in a road trip across Spain searching for the romanic in the mundane.
