The photographic series “Westland” is an attempt to explore and understand a complex region such as that of Western Thessaloniki, Greece, from Republic Square to Sindos and Derveni. The effort is made through the documentation of its urban and peri-urban landscape and through a socio-economic lens.
The simplicity and functionality of the photographs highlight the architecture and landscape of the area, revealing both the refugee and migrant past from Asia Minor and the ex-Soviet countries of the majority of its inhabitants, which is visible in its urban fabric and the high presence of arbitrary buildings and the impact of industrialization on its development and its ecological degradation. The photographs are not intended to be aesthetically pleasing or visually striking, but to reveal the layers of complexity and history that have affected the area.
The series includes images of historical sites in the area, both known and unknown. These photographs serve to highlight its rich history and cultural heritage, which has been shaped by a variety of influences over time, and enrich and deepen the exploration of the area, providing a fuller understanding of its complex society and heritage.
